Best Axe for Chopping Wood

Chopping wood is an essential part of owning a house, especially when the wood warms your house during the winter. Buying the right axe for the right job is crucial to complete the project correctly.

It is easy to assume that all axes are alike, and they will do what they need to. The wrong axe can become damaged, or the wood may not split the right way.Different axes can become unwieldy, cause more problems, or just break if not used for the right job.

There are felling or cutting axes that are perfect for removing small limbs or branches, but not for chopping wood. The difference is between the two axes should be understood to know how to prepare for chopping wood.

I have found great chopping axes to split those stubborn blocks. Before going to the department store to pick up your chopping axe, there are some things that you should know.

What is the job?

  • Understanding what you’re trying to do will save you money and a repeat trip to the department store. If you’re cutting some small branches, a cutting axe will do the trick. If you need wood chopped, a splitting axe is ideal. A shaping axe is great if you are attempting to widdle.
  • If you are unsure about the project you are planning, measure the wood. Measuring will take the guesswork out of deciding on what axe will work. Taking the time to measure will ensure that you purchase the correct axe the first time.

What Type of Handle Should I Purchase?

  • The handle is important because it can mean the difference between an intact axe and one that is prone to break. The three most common types of handles are wood, Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), or metal. Wood is the most common, and it is light.
  • The GRP handles are more robust than wood, but can be damaged by chemicals. Handles made from metal are excellent for small axes, such as hatchets. Once again, it depends on the project that you need to complete and what you are most comfortable using.

Single-bit or Double-bit?

  • Most axes that people find are the single-bit, where the blade is on one side, and the other side is flat. Single-bit axes are perfect for small axes but tend to have trouble chopping wood, due to the proximity. They’re ideal for cutting as well because you do not need to use your whole body.
  • Double-bit axes are excellent for chopping wood, given that it provides a balanced swing. Double-bit axes are also versatile, so you can use one side for chopping wood, and the other end to cut wood. The force that a double-bit is better than the single-bit because it takes two hands to swing the double-bit.

How can I Tell the Difference Between a Splitting and Cutting axe?

  • There are a few key differences between the two axes. A splitting blade is wider, which allows the user to get a better split in the wood. The deep split that results from the splitting blade forces the wood apart. The blade has a wedge-like build that splits the wood, rather than cutting through it.
  • The best type of blade is one created from high-quality steel, and these are on older axes. Look for a wider blade when browsing through the axe section, and you will find your splitting axe.Now that you know the difference between the types of axes, you can look for your axe. A few of my favorites include:
